Mayor’s Christmas message

Well, what a year it has been. We rang in 2020 through a thick haze of smoke, surrounded by a circle of devastating and deadly bushfires in our state. No sooner had we recovered from that shock, and our world was hit by the COVID-19 health pandemic that brought with it massive shut downs and government restrictions in an effort to keep the most vulnerable in our society safe. The drought was finally broken but with the welcome rain, came flooding and extensive damage to our infrastructure and roads in the Yass Valley. The worst of times always brings out the best in people, however, and I was proud and humbled to see the local community come together to support one another through these challenging times. There is still a journey ahead of us and we are facing another outbreak of COVID-19 in our state ahead of Christmas. We will get through this, as we have before, and we will do it together.

On behalf of all councillors and council staff, I wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and, above all, a happy, safe and healthy 2021.

Public Consultation

Submissions welcome for Civic Precinct

In February 2020, Council endorsed a ‘wish list’ of projects and resolved to undertake planning and design work so the projects would be ‘shovel ready’ in the event of grant funding opportunities. One of these projects is a Civic Precinct, which would include a new library, community rooms and exhibition spaces, long term Government tenants and the retention of Crago Mill among other elements. Council is keen to understand if the elements for inclusion in the Civic Precinct meet community needs and expectations.

At its December 2020 Council meeting, Council resolved to ask the community for further feedback regarding the preferred location for the Civic Precinct. Submissions about the location are particularly sought for the continued use of Council’s current location in Comur Street, Yass, or, alternatively, another site that will meet Council and community needs in the long term.

Community members are invited to make a submission on the proposed location and scope of works.
