Volunteers will be welcomed back to assist with Gannawarra Shire Council’s Meals on Wheels programs from Friday, 1 January 2021.
Run in partnership with Cohuna District Hospital and Kerang District Health, the program sees more than 250 volunteers located throughout the Gannawarra deliver more than 10,000 meals each year to residents in seven towns within the municipality.
“Council made the decision in late March to implement alternative arrangements to protect the health of both volunteers and residents, with our dedicated Community Care team delivering meals for the past nine months,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
“Now with COVID-19 restrictions easing and COVIDsafe measures in place, we are pleased to welcome our dedicated volunteers back to this popular service.
“To protect our volunteers and residents at this time, volunteers will be asked to either wear gloves or use hand sanitiser in between every delivery, remain 1.5 metres from clients and, most importantly, not complete their allotted timeslot if feeling unwell.”
Rosters will be published each month in the Gannawarra Times and online at www.gsc.vic.gov.au/volunteer
“Meals on Wheels is more than just receiving a hot meal. It is about the connection developed between participants and the volunteers who deliver these meals, ” Mr O’Reilly said.
“Anyone wanting to volunteer their time for our Meals on Wheels program and other services, including the L2P Driver Mentor Program, the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre and the Gannawarra Non-Emergency Transport Service, are encouraged to contact Council on (03) 5450 9333.”
