Margaret River’s Main Street Makeover will be complete just in time for Christmas, with the full length of Bussell Highway opening again to vehicles on Wednesday 23 December.
To mark the occasion, the Shire of Augusta Margaret River is calling on main street businesses and the wider community to dress in Christmas kitsch and join construction crews for a fun community parade up the street before it opens to vehicles.
When: Wednesday 23 December at 2pm Where: Meet at the new Festival Precinct on Fearn Avenue Wear: Drape yourself in tinsel or wear your best Christmas kitsch!
Shire President Ian Earl said completion of the project before Christmas would be a boon for traders, visitors and the community alike.
“It’s just fantastic to see the street looking so good,” he said.
“Our contractors and their tradies have been working extremely hard to get the works done by Christmas, compressing the work schedule for this final stage from 17 weeks to 13 weeks.
“I encourage anyone who can make it down to the street on Wednesday to join in the fun and wave the works goodbye.
“It’ll be a great chance to get into the Christmas spirit and collectively welcome a different feel for our centre of town.”
The eleven-month work program has seen a total replacement of underground stormwater infrastructure the entire length of the street, two new roundabouts constructed at both ends of town to improve traffic flows, and several above ground improvements including a new Festival Precinct, cycle path, bike racks, street furniture, more trees and landscaping.
A large community street party is also being organised for the 29 January from 3-9pm.
