With Christmas fast approaching, many pet owners plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is important to keep your pets in mind to ensure they are safe, healthy and happy.

Council’s annual Christmas firework display will not go ahead this year, however pet owners are being urged to remain vigilant for other activities which may cause dogs and cats to be spooked, stressed or anxious.

Councillor Rob Steane said seasonal triggers such as thunderstorms can be just as overwhelming for our pets.

“Thunderstorms have a similar effect as fireworks and can cause extreme panic for animals, including dogs, cats and horses,” Cr Steane said.

According to RSPCA Victoria, loud noises associated with summer thunderstorm season is one of the most prevalent phobias in animals, resulting in thousands of dogs each year demonstrating destructive behaviour, escaping from their properties and injuring themselves.

“At times when severe weather is predicted, make sure your dog or cat is confined to your property. A dog wandering at large may become injured, lost or even stolen.

“It is important that your dog or cat is permanently identifiable, too. It is a legal requirement to register your dog or cat with Council by three months of age and ensure they wear their Council-issued identification tags at all times, as well as being microchipped,” he said.

“With Christmas fast approaching, there will be many pet parents who plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is important to try to keep your pet’s eating and exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. Also, please be sure to steer pets clear of unhealthy treats!

“It is also important that you ensure that your pets are well cared for if you are planning on going away this holiday season. Animals become stressed during your absence and can often escape or cause noise nuisance to neighbours.

“It is recommended to have someone stay with your animals or have them cared for in a boarding kennel or cattery if you are away.”
