Drought funds support projects big and small

Communities large and small across the Gannawarra continue to benefit from support provided by the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme – Extension.

Gannawarra Shire Council received $2 million from the programme in late 2019 to support the rollout of various infrastructure projects, initiatives and events that support community resilience and stimulate the local economy.

“Council is pleased to have rolled out more than 60 initiatives during 2020, with efforts to continue during the first half of 2021,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

“Whether it was public shower upgrades at Lalbert, installation of solar panels on buildings at Murrabit or enhancement works along the Kerang Regional parkrun course, Gannawarra residents continue to benefit from this Federal Government support.”

One of the more recent events to benefit from the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme – Extension occurred across the New Year period, with the Cohuna New Year Carnival operating successfully in Garden Park over three days.

“Council and the Cohuna and District Progress Association were pleased to collaborate on this project, which was a success thanks to the community’s leadership,” Mayor Gillingham said.

“Funding from the Drought Communities Programme – Extension was used to provide patrons with free carnival rides on 1-2 January, with the carnival having a positive flow-on effect for Cohuna’s hospitality sector.”

Meanwhile, numerous halls located throughout the municipality have been rejuvenated thanks to the programme.

“The Lake Charm Hall roof was recently repaired and re-sheeted, enabling the installation of solar panels, whilst repairs and painting works at the Quambatook Hall are nearing completion,” Mayor Gillingham said.

“Improvements have also occurred to the Tragowel Hall, with upgrades to the facility’s flooring, amenities and outdoor barbecue area ensuring community events can continue to be held at the hall.”
