Cardinia Shire’s first fully fenced off-leash dog park equipped with agility equipment is now open

Cardinia Shire Council has opened its first fully fenced off-leash dog park equipped with agility equipment.

The new off-leash dog park, which is located at Don Jackson Reserve, between Ahern Road and Shetland Court in Pakenham, features a range of agility equipment, drinking fountains, rubbish bins, car parking, garden seating, pathways, natural shade and fencing.

The reserve is also home to a district-level play space and cricket oval. The off-leash area, which is more than 6000 square metres, is located in the northern section of the reserve.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Councillor Brett Owen explored the new off leash dog park with his family dog Marshmallow, a 15-year-old Maltese Shih Tzu.

“This is an exciting addition to our community as it is the first fully fenced off-leash dog park with agility equipment in our shire,” Cr Owen said.

“Off-leash dog parks have plenty of benefits for dogs - and their owners!

“They provide the opportunity for dogs to exercise, socialise with other dogs and to practice training techniques. This is an area that I know families and their pets will enjoy over the summer period and beyond.”

Henty Ward Councillor Carol Ryan, who also explored the new park with her 12-year-old Silky Terrier X Maltese named Sheba, said this was a great example of the continued partnership between Council and the Victorian Government.

“This is a superb addition to our shire and really shows the team effort we take with the Victorian Government to deliver projects that have such great benefit for our community - and their pets!” she said.

“This is going to be a great spot for people with dogs – so get outside and explore this new space, I’m sure your pets will love you for it.”

Dog owners are reminded to always maintain control of their dogs. All dog owners must be able to recall their dog promptly and place it back on a leash if required.

The Don Jackson Off Leash Dog Park was supported by the Victorian Government through the Building Works package. For more information, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/dogparks
