Deck'd competition open to Wodonga youth
City of Wodonga 18 Jan 2021

Wodonga youth are being encouraged to get creative to take a stand against drug use.

As part of the Deck'd campaign, youth have the opportunity to put down on a board a positive message around avoiding drug use.

Youth Development Officer Scott Bales said he wanted to flip drugs on its head and get youth thinking.

"What in their life would help them or a friend avoid developing a problem with drugs?," he said.

"We want them to think about connection, community, reaching out, creativity, music, hobbies, being active and your friends, and then submit the artwork.

"We know the dangers and are constantly being told of the consequences of drug use but we want people to take a step back and think about what drives young people to drugs.

"Everyone faces tough times when they might feel left out, disrespected, or forgotten. But it’s important to know that you are in control of your choices and that support is out there."

The competition opens today and those interested have until February 19 to complete and submit their design.

It can be illustrated, painted, typographic, graffiti, or photography, any style you like.

Self-taught painter/designer Kasper will host a free workshop at Wodonga Plaza (in the old 'Just Cuts' space) on Wednesday, January 27.

Kasper, who is from Brisbane, is influenced by street art and skateboarding. He's painted murals, completed artist residencies, hosted exhibitions, designed for companies and taught through: Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne, Bali, Thailand, Canada, Seattle, Las Vegas, LA and Alaska.

The workshop can accommodate 10 participants at any time. If there are already 10 people engaging in the workshop when you arrive, you may be asked to wait or come back at a later time.

The Deck'd Event will be held on Tuesday, April 13 at Al's Skate Co with a pop-up gallery of works, free introductory skate lessons and skate session, merch giveaways and prizes.

The Deck'd design winners will also be announced.
