Public feedback helps finetune Derri toilet design

Published on 19 January 2021

Plans for a new public toilet block in Derrinallum have been redesigned in response to community feedback.

The initial designs incorporated unisex toilets.  In the new design, the male and female toilets have been separated and privacy screens have been added. The accessible and ambulant toilets remain unisex.

Corangamite Shire Engineer Gisele Couto said the historic value of the block was important to the community so Council had sought advice from an expert heritage architect.

“It is not feasible to refurbish the existing block because works to meet safety and accessibility requirements would further alter its aesthetic significance.

“For this reason, the heritage architect supported removal of the building.”

To honour the significance of the old building, Council has considered re-using materials to reinstate the footpath, landscaping works or for garden beds.

Colours for the new block have been selected to ensure it remains sympathetic to the surroundings.

The new design is available here.

A drop-in session will be held at the toilet block on Thursday 28 January from 2 pm – 3 pm to present the revised plans to the community and answer any questions.
