Works are starting this week to bring Bayside’s only synthetic track back up to competition standard to ensure a successful future for athletics. The renewal of the track will include additional throwing facilities; formalised sandpits to safely run concurrent jumping events; a 10-lane front straight; marshalling areas; and a public drinking fountain. Track lighting has been designed and will be installed when funding is secured. There are no works planned, in the near future, for the athletics pavilion or the car park adjacent to Thomas Street. The track will continue to be shared by the Sandringham Athletics and Little Athletics Clubs, local schools and the community. The track will remain open to the public outside of structured athletics training and events hours.
The track and associated car park will be closed during works. Construction will occur on weekdays between 7am and 5pm. Works will involve demolition and excavation, so may be noisy and generate a level of dust at times. We appreciate that with works currently underway to build a new and inclusive playground and public toilet facilities in the Thomas Street Reserve there may be increased traffic congestion in the area. We will work with our contractors to minimise this disruption to residents.
Sandringham Athletics Club and Little Athletics have temporarily re-located during the construction period. For more information about their programs, please visit http://sandyaths.com.au/
This project is part of Council’s plan to provide quality and accessible sports facilities for the community and is expected to be completed by July 2021.
