2021 Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony

FROM:

Mayor, Christina Holmdahl

DATE:

Tuesday 26th January, 2021

The West Tamar Council’s Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony was held on Tuesday 26th January 2021 at 7:30am at the Riverside Golf Club, with approximately 100 guests in attendance.

The awards recognise outstanding contributions to the West Tamar Community, with presentations made in the categories of ‘Citizen of the Year’, ‘Young Citizen of the Year’, ‘Community Event/Group of the Year’ and a ‘Mayor’s Award’.

The 2021 winners were:

Citizen of the Year – Catherine Connell, an inspirational role model for her students at Miss B’s Student Services and the greater community. Young Citizen of the Year – Patrick Rosevear, for his ongoing volunteering roles and advocacy for the West Tamar. Community Event/Group of the Year – Festival Of Small Halls, an important social occasion for locals and the wider community delivering world class musicians and singers to regional destinations, successfully running since 2018. Mayor’s Award – Roslyn Burr, an active and engaged member of the West Tamar community through the Exeter Golf Club, Legana Tennis Club, West Tamar Seniors Advisory Group and her volunteer work at the Tamar Visitor Centre.

Mayor Christina Holmdahl said “The West Tamar Council Australia Day Awards recognise those in our community who have made outstanding contributions to our municipality. They come from all walks of life and give selflessly, often over a number of years. On behalf of the West Tamar Council and everyone in our community, I thank them most sincerely for their contributions”.

West Tamar Council’s 2021 Australia Day Ambassador was Will Smith who also spoke at the event. Mr Smith won the 2020 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year award for helping disadvantaged young people from local football clubs to the Lebanese and Syrian border. He is the founder of JCP Empowering Youth, which enables successful leaders to improve the lives of young people through school, leadership and community programs.

“We’re excited to hear from Will Smith at our Australia Day Awards as he shares the important work which he has been doing with young people, as well as the Building Resilient Youth Program which he’s embarking on in partnership with the West Tamar Council and local schools in 2021,” Mayor Christina Homdahl said.

We also welcomed 10 new citizens from Vietnam, Singapore, United Kingdom, India and China to our municipality, in an important part of the proceedings committing them to being an active member of Australian society.

“There is no greater privilege than our citizenship. It’s a life-long commitment to Australia’s shared values, including respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual, the rule of law and democracy, and equality of opportunity for all people,” Mayor Holmdahl said.

“Each year we are privileged to welcome new Australians to our growing community as part of Australia Day celebrations”.

New citizens received gifts to remember the occasion, along with their Australian Citizenship.
