Local police sergeant Michael Hobden is Boulia's Citizen of the Year. Sgt Hobden took out the honour at the town's Australia Day awards on Tuesday. Sgt Hobden was promoted to officer in charge of Boulia Police Station in March 2019 after working as the OIC of Mungindi Station for over two years. He works alongside Boulia's first permanent female officer, Senior Constable Kelli Norris. Boulia's Australia Day celebrations started with a traditional smoking ceremony and welcome to country, performed by the Pitta Pitta Corporation directors before the awards at the Shire Hall. Boulia's own Australia Day Ambassador June Jackson was on hand to give a speech and present her good friend Jan Norton, from the Boulia Community Support Service, with an Australia Day Award for the 2021 Organisation of the Year. Connor Hindom was announced as the 2021 Junior Citizen of the Year at the event officiated by Mayor Rick Britton.
