New ramp will improve access to Camperdown Court House

Getting in and out of a much-loved historical building will be easier when a ramp is installed at the Camperdown Court House.

The ramp will let people with all abilities use the community hub, visitor information centre and arts space.

Corangamite Shire Council and the Camperdown Court House Committee have been working together to finalise a concept design for the ramp.

Council Infrastructure Projects Coordinator Steven Fisher said the design included a new entrance from McNicol Street, with easy access from the bus stop.

“We invite members of the community to look at the proposed design and give us their feedback.

“They are welcome to come to a drop-in session at the court house at 10 am on Wednesday 3 February. Council Officers will be there to answer any questions about the proposed works. The plans and a feedback form are available here. at corangamite.vic.gov.au/Court-House.”

Mr Fisher said a heritage advisor is providing advice on appropriate location and construction methods to reflect the building’s historical significance.

Built in Medieval Gothic Revival style in 1886-7, the court was in service until 1990.

It was restored in 1993-4 for use as a retail outlet and tourist information centre.

As well as being historically significant, the Victorian Heritage register says it is an outstanding example of multicoloured brickwork and an innovative fusion of classical court house planning with High Victorian Gothic imagery.
