A BLUE ALERT has been called for Onslow as the Department of Fire and Emergency Services advise community members to get ready for dangerous weather caused by the current tropical low moving towards the west the Pilbara coast.
Update time: 8:53 pm AWST Sunday 31 January 2021.
There is no immediate danger, but residents, businesses and property owners are required to prepare for dangerous weather and keep up to date.
DFES advises:
Fasten all cyclone screens, secure boats, caravans, trailers, garden sheds, outdoor furniture, rainwater tanks and LPG bottles Move vehicles under cover Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area Pack a relocation kit to be taken with your emergency kit Be aware that shops may now be closingThe Shire of Ashburton has been monitoring the evolving weather conditions and is preparing for severe weather.
As advised earlier this afternoon, sandbags will be available from our Onslow Depot from midday Monday 1 February. We are working on securing facilities and sites, parks and playgrounds, securing loose items and removing shade sails. We are also working with local agencies and other government authorities to ensure the safety of our community and putting plans in place for recovery in the event of damage from high winds and flooding. The tropical low is overland and may move offshore late Monday or Tuesday and develop into a tropical cyclone. There remains a chance that the system moves further south than forecast, remains over land and does not intensify. This would significantly decrease the chance of gales in coastal communities.
For up to date information please visit emergency.wa.gov.au and bom.gov.au or listen to ABC Radio 1188 AM.
Flooding impacts and squally winds will extend into the west Pilbara later Monday and Tuesday regardless of whether the system tracks over land or over the ocean.
COVID-19What to do if you are self-isolating or quarantining due to COVID-19:
Decide where you will shelter during the cyclone. If it is not safe to shelter in your current location, find alternative suitable premises and wear a mask.
Regardless of your location, continue to follow COVID-19 precautions and maintain appropriate physical distancing.
ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONHeavy rainfall in the area means some roads could be impacted by rising water levels and strong wind gusts could make travel dangerous. Motorists are reminded to obey all road closures and take care when travelling through the area. Never drive into water of unknown depth and current.
