Moree Plains Shire Council has a rare and exciting opportunity available for a creative and eager professional to join its Economic Development Department, as Grants/Economic Development Officer.

“The economic future of the Moree Plains is looking particularly bright; with rains returned to the plains, construction about to commence on the Inland Rail, master planning for Moree’s Special Activation Precinct underway, and more opportunity than ever to entice city dwellers to call the Moree Plains home with the increase in remote working ability due to Covid-19”, said Council’s Team Leader – Economic Development Mrs Susannah Pearse.

The Grants/Economic Development Officer will help capitalise on these opportunities and drive the economic advancement of the region by coordinating initiatives and projects that support local businesses, attract investment, and promote the Moree Plains as a great place to work, live and invest.

The position also plays a significant role in maximising state and federal grant revenue for the Shire, contributing to Council’s high grants success rate which has seen over $45m of funding received over the past three years.

Mrs Pearse described the role as “highly rewarding - where you can make a real impact in our community by bringing exciting projects and initiatives from concept to reality”.

“Whether it be through industry collaborations or funding applications, this role has the ability to help shape the Moree Plains of the future. It would suit an optimistic person and team player with an appreciation of the local industry context, and a desire to improve the prosperity of the local community”.

Key projects on the horizon for 2021 include:

the development and opening of The Greenhouse – a collaboration with the University of New England which will see their SMART Region Incubator take up a permanent residence in Moree, in a dynamic co-working space a new promotional campaign to encourage regional migration to the Moree Plains, in alignment with Council’s participation in the Regional Australia Institute’s Regional Activators’ Alliance Launch of the Moree Plains Business Hub – a free online business directory, events calendar and networking space for local businesses Progressing of the Moree CBD Masterplan through funding applications in consultation with Council and the Urban Advisory Committee Collaboration with the Moree Chamber of Commerce, Mungindi Progress Association, Tourism Moree and Bank Art Museum on existing and new partnership projects Finalisation of the Moree Plains Economic Development Strategy and commencement of its implementation.

“The role will take you to all corners of the Moree Plains Shire community and enable you to connect with community groups and business owners across the Shire, expanding your local network and gaining invaluable insights into the local community”, said Mrs Pearse.

Desirable skills include high level written and verbal communication, an understanding of the local business context, ability to foster strong commercial and community relationships, and an ability to produce high quality work under pressure.

The position is a full time, temporary role, to the end of December 2021. Applications for the Grants/Economic Development Officer role will close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 20 January 2021.
