One way traffic trial for Centennial Circuit in the Byron A&I estate

Businesses and regular visitors to the Byron Arts and Industry Estate are asked to get ready for a one-way traffic trial on Centennial Circuit.

The trial will start in the last week of February 2021 and will run for six months to September.

Isabelle Hawton, Project Planner, said locals are aware that traffic and congestion are increasing problems and the concept of a one-way traffic trial came out of the development of the Byron Arts and Industry Estate Precinct Plan in 2019.

“As part of the development of the Precinct Plan we spoke to residents, business owners and people who work in the estate and feedback from them included a need for better traffic management,” Ms Hawton said.

“Anyone who has driven on Centennial Circuit recently will be aware of the increasing volume of cars and trucks and how congested it can be.

“A trial of one-way traffic over six months will take in the busy Easter period as well as the months that are traditionally more quiet and the results will enable us to gauge if traffic is flowing better,” she said.

From the end of February traffic will be one way only in a clockwise direction on Centennial Drive between Brigantine Street and Wollongbar Street. Signage will be in place from early February to alert people to the changes, and staff will also be dropping information to businesses in the area to alert them to the trial.

“No doubt it will take a little time for some people to get used to the changes and we ask for people’s patience and understanding,” Ms Hawton said.

To help Council evaluate the success or otherwise of the one-way trial a survey has been developed asking people for their opinions about traffic flow and safety.

“The idea is that people will fill in the survey before the trial starts and then again during the trial to see if their opinions have changed,” Ms Hawton said.
