COVID-19 lockdown cancels community concert

The City has made the decision to cancel its annual Cockburn Central community concert, scheduled for Saturday 6 February, following the State Government’s 5-day COVID-19 lockdown announcement.

The lockdown is due to end at 6pm next Friday, 5 February, but the decision to cancel the concert was made during a Crisis Management Team meeting at the City this morning.

Mayor Logan Howlett said as the event was due to attract a large gathering of people, the City did not believe it was prudent to stage the event, even if lockdown had ended.

The popular free concert was due to be held at the Fremantle Dockers official training ground at Victor Kailis Oval, Cockburn ARC, featuring WA artists, as a way to show support for the industry following the cancellation of many home grown acts during the state’s 2020 lock down.

The City has also postponed its Annual General Meeting, due to be held tomorrow – 2 February – and a future date will be communicated in due course.

All City facilities including Cockburn ARC, the Seniors Centre, Libraries, Youth Centre, the Spearwood Administration Office, Bibra Lake Operations Centre and Port Coogee Marina Services Office will be closed all week, until further notice.

In line with the lockdown announcement, the following public facilities are closed:

All playgrounds Exercise equipment Barbecues Skate parks Water play areas Dog parks Public toilets Pump tracks Drinking fountains. All waste collection services, including kerbside waste bins, verge hard waste collections, park and litter bins, will continue as normal.

Henderson Waste Recovery Park (HWRP) will not accept domestic deliveries, and will be open to commercial customers only. The Reuse Shop at HWRP will not open this Friday and will stay closed until further notice.

Services still operating include:

Parks and beaches – Residents can only use parks and beaches within 5km of their residence, only in groups of two and wearing masks at all times  Manning Park stairs  Cockburn Care – In-home services will continue, except for social club activities which will be communicated directly to clients  Youth Services – Centre is closed, but high risk case-managed young people will be contacted and provided with on-going appropriate safe support  Family and Community Services – Financial counselling and parenting services will operate via telephone and online. In-person appointments will be postponed/cancelled Seniors Centre – The Seniors Centre is closed. All members will be notified and offered support options. Vulnerable members will be contacted by phone regularly for support  In-home childcare/Family Day Care – These Independent contractor employees are essential workers and will choose to close (no City fee charged) or operate within the State Government health regulations, with the addition of masks for adult contact. Any further changes to the operation of City facilities, community services or events will be detailed on the City’s website, via its enews service and social media channels.

Mayor Howlett said while the closures were inconvenient, they were necessary to protect the community following State Government health advice in response to a positive COVID-19 detection in the Perth metropolitan area.

“COVID-19 continues to rapidly change how we live and work. Our top priority remains the health and safety of our residents, especially those most vulnerable to the virus,” Mayor Howlett said.

“We encourage our residents to heed the State Government’s instruction not to use playgrounds and observe social distancing when exercising, and to wear masks outside the home.”
