AUSTRALIA DAY
I acknowledge and thank all the community groups that worked tirelessly over the last couple of months to bring the Australia Day events throughout our region to life last week – they wouldn’t happen without you!
Unfortunately it wasn’t possible for me to get around the entire region, but I did attend the Jindabyne and Cooma events, which were both very well attended. It was also great to see that our local members John Barilaro and Bronnie Taylor attended the Nimmitabel event.
Congratulations to the Australia Day award winners recognised at each ceremony (see Council’s Facebook page for a list of winners) and my thanks also go out to our two Australia Day Ambassadors – Susanne Gervay OAM and William Chan (2020 NSW Young Australian of the Year Finalist)
Finally, the citizenship ceremony is always the highlight of the day for me and it’s my great pleasure to congratulate and welcome the 12 individuals who became Australian citizens.
MICHELAGO PONY CLUB EVENT
On Saturday I was invited to attend an event for the Michelago Pony Club. This is one of the most popular events in the junior equestrian calendar and was attended by representatives from all over the state. It was wonderful to see the kids developing their horsemanship skills and I was delighted to present the award to the winner of the Flag Spectacular event.
HOUSING PRESSURES
I am regularly contacted by community members to discuss the increasing housing pressure in our region. Last week I met with Snowy 2.0 to discuss our community concerns and the future impacts this may have particularly in the areas surrounding Cooma and Adaminaby. Snowy 2.0 have assured me that they are endeavouring to work with authorities to improve the accommodation options for their workers and Council will provide further information when it becomes available.
BUMPER TOURIST SEASON
While the number of tourists in our region has started to drop with the end of school holidays, I think we can all agree that it was an incredibly busy summer season! It has been fantastic to see so many enjoying all the sights and attractions throughout our incredible region and, with international travel off the cards, I’m hopeful we’ll continue to see above normal levels of tourists and visitors through to Easter.
