A new personal protective equipment assembly facility and retail shopfront has opened in Collie’s central business district thanks to a collaborative approach by Shire of Collie Council, staff and proponents Big Start Pty Ltd.
According to Big Start’s planning proposal, the proposed facility will create significant local employment, depending on demand.
An exemption from Development Approval was granted under Covid-19 emergency legislation at a Special Meeting of Council, bypassing complex legal issues that would otherwise prohibit the development.
Shire President Sarah Stanley welcomed the development.
“Council recognised this was an incredible opportunity for Collie to develop and diversify its economy,” Cr Stanley said.
“We were able to find a workaround to allow this business to get off the ground almost immediately, while we continue to work with Big Start on a long-term solution.
“The outcome is a tangible demonstration of our “can-do” attitude to working with businesses and government, resulting in a new value-adding industry and employment opportunities for our people.”
