Baw Baw Shire Council will replace major culverts along a section of Copelands Road this month to improve the flow of stormwater from neighbouring residential developments.
The road will be closed between 9 to 26 February between Sutton Street and Bailey Drive, with a detour in place via Number One Road onto Bloomfield Road. Local access will remain up to Bella Vista Drive.
When complete, the culverts will carry twice the amount of stormwater during large storm events and reduce the risk of flash flooding.
At a total cost of $230,000, the works will be delivered by Sure Constructions on behalf of Council and will include altering the existing water main, removing the old culverts and installing the new culvert system.
Due to the width of the existing culvert, a full road closure is required to ensure the works can be delivered efficiently with minimal disruptions.
The works are part of Council’s $1 million investment in drainage projects as part of the 2020/21 Capital Works Program. This includes underground drainage systems, open (surface) drains, crossroad culverts and storm water retention basins.
Quotes attributable to Mayor Cr Danny Goss
“Increasing the capacity of the culvert system along Copelands Road will allow the stormwater system to cope with any high rainfall events. I encourage the community to take note of the detours that will be in place for the next few weeks while the works occur and allow some extra travel time to accommodate for it.”
