RSL Memorial Park benefiting from drought support funds

Visitors to Cohuna’ various service commemorations will benefit from improvements funded by the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme – Extension.

Gannawarra Shire Council received $2 million from the programme to support the rollout of various infrastructure projects, initiatives and events that support community resilience and stimulate the local economy.

“More than 60 initiatives have benefited so far from this support, with Council and community organisations to continue rolling out projects in the coming months,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

One of these projects nearing completion is improvements to the Cohuna RSL Memorial Park, which hosts the town’s ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day commemorations.

“The Cohuna/Leitchville Returned and Services League has successfully erected memorials in the area bordered by the Cohuna Memorial Hall and Council’s Cohuna offices to commemorate residents who have served in all armed conflicts and peacekeeping efforts overseas,” Mayor Gillingham said.

“Council is pleased to have used a portion of its funding from the Drought Communities Programme – Extension to install paving throughout the site, which provides linkages between all of the memorials. This paving, as well as the construction of a new pedestrian kerb ramp and section of footpath, will also improve accessibility for attendees at Cohuna’s ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day commemorations.

“Final works, including the installation of bench seating and pavers depicting the logos of the three arms of Australia’s defence forces along with the RSL logo, will be completed in the coming weeks.”
