Karralyka is set to shake off 2020 with the launch of a bold and inspiring new theatre season program for 2021 and new-look website!

The theatre makes its grand return to the stage next month as it welcomes back audiences after COVID-19 forced venue closures last March.

Karralyka is also excited to unveil its highly interactive, new-look website, which is now live and ready to be explored. Featuring a bright clean look and user-friendly navigation, the updated website includes an online ticketing system and interactive seat map, giving you the ability to choose your theatre seats and take a virtual tour of the stage from where you’ll be seated!

Browse the full 2021 theatre season program, as well as indoor function spaces and outdoor gazebo available for hire for corporate events, cocktail parties and wedding ceremonies.

For four decades, Karralyka has been dedicated to bringing world-class performances to the widest possible local audience, making arts and culture accessible to everyone.

Mayor Cr Kylie Spears said that in the year of COVID, Karralyka provided an entertainment lifeline to the Maroondah community with live-streamed shows and on-demand streaming.

“Karralyka pivoted its 2020 season programming by moving to a digital platform to bring the performing arts into people’s homes, while at the same time supporting artists during a particularly challenging time for the performing arts industry,” Cr Spears said.

“Council also acknowledges with gratitude the many people who have continued to support the theatre in great numbers during last year’s protracted lockdown period,” she said.

“It’s been almost a year since the curtains came down on live performances, so we are excited to be welcoming audiences back to the theatre for 2021!” Cr Spears said.

The Karralyka theatre reopens for the new season with a spectacular line-up of Australia’s best talent that will delight and excite audiences of all ages - from musical drama to comedy and song, and everything in-between.

The theatre season kicks off in March with Bobby Fox, star of the Australian production of Jersey Boys, set to deliver a stunning combination of traditional and modern Irish music, dancing, storytelling and song brought to life through Bobby’s unparalleled showmanship in Bobby Fox: The Irish boy. 

And in April, Australia’s favourite comedy convoy arrives featuring some of the funniest acts direct from the 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Karralyka will again welcome major theatre companies and their productions including the Victoria State Ballet’s classic tale of Swan Lake; and for the youngest of theatre-goers, The Gruffalo’s Child will deliver songs, laughs and scary fun with a magical musical adaptation from the award-winning picture book.

The Dinosaur Time Machine lands in time for Easter school holidays with an opportunity for youngsters to get up close and personal with a life-sized T-Rex!

The second half of the year sees the inspiring story of Australia’s first culinary queen brought to life on stage in Margaret Fulton: The Musical; and strap yourself in for a night of glittering glam rock and phenomenal acrobatics with Rebel, a live circus rock tribute to the original rebel, David Bowie.

The tributes continue as Damien Leith and Darren Coggan come together to celebrate the songbook of the most inspiring songwriters of all-time, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, in the Two of us: The songs of Lennon and McCartney.

And why not gather your friends together for an evening of cabaret and dinner with the Grand Wazoo Band, Australia’s legendary 13-piece soul kings, as they bring their ‘brassy blaster’ style of music to the Karralyka function rooms in August.

The theatre is also excited to welcome back seniors to its popular Morning Music program (formerly Toe Tapping Tuesday), with music and complimentary tea, coffee and treats throughout the year. And for younger theatre-goers, Karrakids has an exciting line-up of fun interactive educational performances, with art and craft sessions prior to each show.

The current capacity of the theatre has been reduced to ensure social distancing measures are adhered to, which means a more intimate experience.
