Step up to clean up the Snowy Monaro

Local residents are being encouraged to register for Clean Up Australia Day and do their part for the local environment on 7 March 2021.
The country’s largest community environmental event opened for registration in December and a number of local groups have already taken the opportunity to sign up. However, with recent research showing more than one in three Australian households have generated more waste in the last year, more help is needed to make a difference.
“This year has seen disruption to our lives and to our local environments which have been impacted by increased uptake of single-use, disposable items” said Pip Kiernan, Clean Up Australia Day Chairman.
Mayor Peter Beer, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, is excited about the upcoming event.
“Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect opportunity for residents to give back to the community and reconnect after a difficult and isolating year.”
Clean Up Australia has announced a COVID-Safe protocol for this year’s event. Each group event will have limited numbers, official Clean Up kits will include registration QR codes and hand sanitiser, while bags and gloves will be provided for every volunteer. Owing to these precautionary measures, registration is essential.
“Whether you’ve lived in the Snowy Monaro for 20 years or two weeks, you know that the best part about our community is that we all pitch in and do our part. Our environment is the key to the region’s continuing economic success and it’s important we take care of it.” Said Mayor Beer.
For those unable to join a local Clean Up event this year, people can instead donate to Clean Up Australia. All proceeds are used for education and clean-up activities.
Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday 7 March 2021. The associated events Business Clean Up Day is on Tuesday 2 March and Schools Clean Up Day falls on Friday 5 March.
