A new education campaign by Blue Mountains City Council is focusing on how to dispose of hazardous waste correctly.
The Hazardous waste… together we’ve got it sorted campaign, running to June 2021, is providing easy-to-understand and up-to-date information to residents, home renovators and home renovation businesses.
This month the focus is on Council’s three main disposal methods for hazardous waste –
• Community Recycling Centres: These are available to dispose of low toxicity hazardous materials (items commonly used and found around the household). • Household Chemical Clean Out Events: On specified dates, high toxicity hazardous waste can be taken to the waste management facilities. • Asbestos Disposal: Bonded (non-friable) asbestos can be disposed of at Blaxland Waste Management Facility with prior booking and must comply with the terms and conditions for asbestos disposal. Please note: If you are removing and disposing of any friable asbestos, or more than 10 m2 of bonded (non-friable) asbestos, you must engage a licensed asbestos removal contractor.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “The health of our community, and our World Heritage environment, can be at risk if hazardous waste is not handled and disposed of correctly.
“This education campaign highlights that everyone has a responsibility to ensure the safe handling and disposal of this type of waste.”
