Friday, 12 February: At Cockburn Council’s Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday night, 11 February, the Council adopted several recommendations, including a permanent Commercial Food Waste Service following a successful 6-month trial. Cockburn’s successful commercial food waste trial, which took less than six months to divert greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to powering an average Australian household for 16 years, will become a permanent service. opens in a new window The free trial diverted 35+ tonnes of food waste from landfill, equal to preventing 67,448 kg (CO2- equivalent) greenhouse gas emissions.

The State firefighter’s union has lauded the arrival of Cockburn’s new fire station, more than six years after its predecessor was closed. opens in a new window The $11m purpose-built facility on North Lake Road will be one of the biggest stations in WA and operate as a hub for the southern suburbs.

Local businesses say last week’s lockdown burnt a hole in their wallets with the hospitality industry again feeling the force of the restrictions. opens in a new window Bibra Lake-based coffee roasters Leaf Bean Machine owner Brad Cassidy, who runs the business with his wife Fleur, said the initial restrictions had left them feeling “pretty goddamn average”.
