This is our monthly look at what happened in council meetings across North West Queensland. We take a look at what was discussed and decided in January 2021. Cloncurry Shire Council The Arthur Beetson Carnival is returning to the Curry in May. Council resolved to Council support the carnival by providing free camping at the Recreation Ground and Equestrian Centre, free hire of the Community Precinct and Recreation Grounds, allocating up to $20,000 from the Community Development budget, and will work with QRL Central Division and other local businesses, community groups and organisations to source sponsorship of up to $30,000. Council also spent money on plant replacement. It bought a a 2020 Caterpillar CS78B Roller from Hastings Deering for $214,000 bought three 4 Drop Deck Widener Trailers from Tough Trailers for the purchase for $220,000. Boulia Shire Council Council awarded a tender to supply and install Boulia town fencing to Norton Fencing for $176,052.80 with further price negotiations to occur after the awarding of the tender for the Urandangi scope of works. Council also applied for Building Better Regions funding to support the future of Boulia Shire's Regional Community Precinct which will provide a 'one stop shop' for service delivery for administration, Library, Post Office and external office space. The funding request is for $2.4m which will be matched by council funding if successful. Burke Shire Council Council approved a development permit with conditions for reconfiguring one Lot into 3 small Lots on the corner of Musgrave Street and Burke Street, Burketown. Each lot is to be independently connected to the reticulated sewerage system, water service, electricity and telecommunications infrastructure. The CEO said legal firm McCullough Roberson was providing pro bono conveyancing services to staff who are buying their homes. Council staff will now be offered those whose tenants are not purchasing, and then they will be offered to investors. Carpentaria Shire Council Meeting minutes not yet available Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council Nida Asgar, Director of Nursing at Doomadgee Hospital gave an update to the meeting. She advised that the COVID machine was working at the Hospital now and the turn around for results of the testing were less than an hour. The hospital staffing is at full capacity. Four staff from the hospital at a time are doing the training for the COVID testing. Contractors are employed to follow up on any COVID traces. Councillors raised concerns that there should be a list of people in Doomadgee with health issues/heart conditions supplied to the Police so that when they are called out they know who are not well people. Nida advised that this could not happen without the consent of the vulnerable person. The Police should attend each call out with caution anyway. A renal machine from Sydney was late arriving and should be in town by March. The locals are refusing to leave Doomadgee for treatment. When machine arrives the nurses will be able to carry out the whole dialysis treatment. Flinders Shire Council Council awarded a tender for the design, supply and construct of Flinders Discovery Centre upgrades to JKC Building Pty Ltd for $1,286,215. Council also awarded a tender for gravel cartage on the Torrens Creek Aramac Road to Prairie Services Pty Ltd for $1,190,800. Flinders Shire received $612,065 from the federal Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. the money will be spent on CCTV cameras ($120,000), Glentor Road - Bitumen approaches to Glendower crossing $200,000 Discovery Centre - Stage 2 upgrade $217,065 and Pool - Kiosk and Fence upgrade $75,000. McKinlay Shire Council Council approved an additional two stages for a accommodation building (workers accommodation) on Golfcourse Road, Julia Creek. The application was lodged by Vision Surveys (QLD) Pty Ltd engaged by Marwill Pty Ltd. Heidi Marshall and Ian Bridge from CopperString Project presented their Environmental Impact Assessment to Council. The draft EIS was presented to the state Coordinator General on November 20 and public submissions were invited to February 12. Once the EIS is approved, anticipated by June 2021, the investment decision to proceed will be made by the proponents in the third quarter of 2021. The aim is to commence construction of the first of nine construction camps in December 2021 with the CopperString electricity link being constructed over 2 - 3 year period from January 2022. A project camp will be constructed near Julia Creek to service the construction of the electricity link. Mornington Shire Council Council resolved to install a temporary fence for the control and containment of the horses roaming unrestrained within the township of Gununa and funding the primary labour for the works via a Youth Program.
