The City of Fremantle is calling for young people who are passionate about advocating youth issues on behalf of their peers and wider community to join the Fremantle Youth Network.
Nominations are now open to people aged 12–24 who live, work or study in Fremantle to join the Fremantle Youth Network for a two-year term.
Successful applicants will be part of the 15-member group who come together every month to discuss youth issues, ideas, causes and campaigns for Fremantle’s younger constituents.
Fremantle Deputy Mayor Andrew Sullivan said the Fremantle Youth Network played an important role in fostering communication between Council and young people, as well as providing a vital forum for direct youth consultation.
“Fremantle Council is highly committed to making Freo a youth-friendly city and ensuring it’s a thriving place to live, work and study for young people,” Deputy Mayor Sullivan said.
“Young people deserve a say about the future of the world they are inheriting, and the Fremantle Youth Network gives them that opportunity to get their views heard and help shape the decisions that impact them.
“The incoming Fremantle Youth Network will be instrumental in helping to develop the City’s new Youth Plan, plan the Fremantle Youth Week event and inform the City of youth perspectives.
“City administration and Council look forward to collaborating with the Fremantle Youth Network to create a more connected youth community.”
Two members of the outgoing Fremantle Youth Network were recently honoured with Fremantle’s Young Citizen of the Year awards. Caitlin Eaton, an advocate for young people in the LGBTQI+ space, and Midaiah Harnett, a law student and social justice activist, were recognised for their enthusiastic volunteering contributions.
The Fremantle Youth Network holds a formal meeting on the third Monday of each month, as well as event planning meetings during youth campaigns and projects.
Members of the Fremantle Youth Network will also be the first to hear about leadership and speaking opportunities, state forums, training, camps and events.
Nominations for the Fremantle Youth Network close at 5pm, Friday 26 March 2021.
