Heritage buildings capture our rich history and are significant in our community. It is important to take steps to care for and preserve them.

Council is offering small grants of up to $3000 to eligible owners of heritage buildings and other items which are listed in the Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Local Environmental Plans as items of significance.

The works must be approved and completed before applying for a grant and the allocation must not exceed 50 per cent of the total project cost.

Projects that may be eligible for a grant include:

Repairs to structural components such as underpinning walls and repointing brickworkRepainting of external walls of buildingsRepairing or reinstating walls, windows, verandahs, external balustrades, roof cladding or plumbing and decorative elements of buildingsRepairing historic fences, drainage and bridge structures

Priority is given to works which save buildings from deterioration.

Previously awarded recipients have reinstated historic mortar on sandstone cottages and repaired leaking roofs and verandahs.

St Marys Catholic Church in Manly received a grant last year, using it to restore the corroded sandstone blockwork on their building.

Laurie deAmbrosis from the Church was impressed with the ease of the application process.

“It was very easy indeed,” he said. “You just need to fill out the application form and attach the relevant documents.

My only advice is to have a good record of the works carried out along with a record of the invoices paid.

We were very pleased with the finished works. In those areas repaired, it has restored the church sandstone to a near new condition.”

Applications are now open and should include:

a completed application formproof of approval for works undertakenevidence of costs (invoices and receipts)plans/sketches and photographs before and after the works.

Applications must be submitted to Council by 5pm on Wednesday, 31 March.
