The ANZ Bank has announced that it will permanently close its branch on Macquarie Road in Springwood.
From Wednesday April 7, 2021 Springwood and lower Mountains residents who are unable to do their banking online will have to travel to ANZ branches in Katoomba, Penrith, St Marys or Richmond.
Mayor Mark Greenhill reacted to the announcement saying: “It is simply not good enough for the Blue Mountains community to have essential services like face-to-face banking cut like this. This will be a major inconvenience for elderly Blue Mountains residents and for those with limited mobility. “Council was not consulted about this decision and we do not support it.” The bank has stated that ‘customers changing preferences’ to online and digital banking is the reason for the closure.
On Monday, national media outlets reported that the ANZ bank will close a total of 19 branches around the country in both urban and regional locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
The move by the ANZ follows the closure of the Katoomba and Springwood branches of the Sydney Mutual Bank in November last year, and the closure of the Katoomba branch of the St George Bank in December 2020.
