Fremantle residents are being asked to have their say in shaping the City of Fremantle’s priorities for community and recreational facilities for the next 10 years.
An interim Community, Sport and Recreation Facilities Plan 2021-2031, which analyses existing provision, population growth and recreation trends, was considered by Fremantle Council last year.
The document takes into account previous work done by the City to strategically plan for its community infrastructure and sets some broad direction for facilities across the city, but further community input is needed before the detail can be added.
Fremantle residents now have until 25 March to provide their thoughts to guide the further development of the plan.
Deputy Mayor Andrew Sullivan said the City of Fremantle provided a wide range of facilities catering for all sorts of activities and people from all walks of life.
“The City is fortunate to have more than 190 hectares of public open space and 96 community and recreation spaces and facilities, but many of those facilities are ageing and will need upgrades in the near future,” Deputy Mayor Sullivan said.
“As well as maintaining existing facilities for traditional sports like football, netball and cricket, we also need to cater for increasingly popular ‘alternative’ activities and informal recreation like skating and adventure sports through projects like the proposed mountain bike trails in Booyeembara Park.
“We also need to take advantage of opportunities for integration and co-location, such as the new Fremantle Park Sport and Community Centre and the co-located club house and community centre at the Fremantle Public Golf Course.
“The City has already done some targeted consultation with sporting clubs and community groups and we’d now like to hear from the more informal users of our facilities and recreational spaces.
“We’d also like to hear from those who don’t use our facilities at all to understand why not and what we could do to make them more relevant and attractive.
“The feedback we receive will be really important in assessing how well we are catering to the leisure and recreation needs of the community and identifying where improvements are needed as we plan for the future.”
Community facilities operated by the City of Fremantle include the Fremantle Library, Wanjoo Lounge, The Meeting Place, Sullivan Hall and North Fremantle Community Centre
Sporting facilities include the Fremantle Leisure Centre, Samson Recreation Centre, Fremantle Public Golf Course and the Fremantle Park Sport and Community Centre, as well as ovals and clubrooms like Fremantle Oval, Stevens Reserve, Hilton Park, Frank Gibson Park and Gilbert Fraser Reserve.
Community engagement on the Community, Sport and Recreational Facilities Plan is open until 25 March and includes four ‘open house’ sessions at the following locations:
