Gallery exhibition featuring Gympie’s youngest artists

Available now, ‘The Collection – Through a child’s eye’ is an exhibition that captures children’s interpretation of six artworks selected from the Gympie Regional Council Art Collection. 

Artworks were placed on display in Gympie kindergartens and at the Gympie Regional Gallery during school holiday workshops. Children of all ages were encouraged to respond creatively focusing on the use of colour, shape and creative thinking as they learnt the narrative behind each of the selected artworks. 

Children 3-4 years old from Kids Bizz responded to the artwork Australian Gold Rush by Bette Phillips and explored the history of Australia’s Goldrush and the symbolism of each of the objects included in the still life. Uniting Church Care Centre children searched for birds hidden in prominent Gympie artist Ian Gunn’s artwork Flightpath Reclaimed. The children of My Kindy Victory College were inspired by the story of Dilang-na-lor (mudcrab) and Bin-jeera (bream) by Kim (Noombi) Miller. While the children of Goodstart Jones Hill learnt about mixed media and truck stories while responding to Ian Smith’s Truckload 0401 Range Road – Road Rage. 

Finally, the children aged 8 – 12 years that attended the Gallery’s Summer ‘Art Club’ Program were presented with two separate works. They explored their imagination and creative emotion while being inspired by Self Portrait Rowing with Dugong (How to Raise a Siren) by Todd Fuller and enjoyed learning about the local Gympie history captured by Scottish Mine from Gold Fields Series #14 by Lynne Wilson. 

This exhibition showcases the wonderful way children think and feel, while simultaneously educating and nurturing the creative skills of Gympie’s youngest artists. This exhibition will be on view until Saturday, 20 March 2021.

Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday.
