A new state-of-the-art Wyndham Street Surfer Bus has been officially launched today.
The new bus is fitted out with WiFi, music and DJ equipment, gaming consoles, art equipment, sports equipment including a mobile basketball ring and soccer goals, and five LCD screens inside and an outdoor LCD screen which can be utilised for gaming and movies, Apple iMac and PC computers and more.
It’s also a place where young people can build their skills through recreational and educational workshops, and a safe space where they can engage with Council’s Youth Services team and access information, advice, support and referrals.
This project has been jointly funded by Wyndham City ($568,000) and the State Government ($1 million). Council will also cover the annual costs associated with the ongoing running of the bus.
Wyndham City Mayor Adele Hegedich said the new Street Surfer Bus replaces the old bus and provides young people with the tools they need to enjoy healthy, active and fulfilling lives
“Wyndham City has a higher than average youth population and is it vital that we engage Wyndham’s young people and provide a place where they feel safe, well supported and connected to their community,” Cr Hegedich said.
“Through the bus, our team will offer after-hours and weekend support to young people across Wyndham, providing help when and where they need it most.”
“Later this year, we’ll also begin visiting local secondary schools for lunch-time visits.”
“The Street Surfer Bus is just one of the ways Wyndham City supports the growth and development of our young people.”
“I’d like to thank the State Government for their generous grant towards this important project.”
Cr Hegedich said the bus would operate in a COVID-safe way and in line with any restrictions in place at all times.
