Council will apply for more than $500,000 in funding to upgrade or replace bus stops to ensure they comply with accessibility standards.

There are more than 330 bus stops in the Cairns Regional Council local government area, with about 89% of these having been made Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) compliant over the past seven years.

It is expected that successful funding will allow an additional 4% of stops to be made DDA compliant by the end of the June, with the remaining 7% bus stops required to be complaint by December 2022.

Council will apply for $213,750 under the Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Program to upgrade 15 bus stop sites to DDA compliance, and $171,000 under the Bus Stop Shelter Program for the replacement / installation of shelters at 16 bus stop sites.
