Tidy Towns and Council are encouraging locals to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day to beautify one of the city's most historic sites.
The Broken Hill Cemetery Clean Up will be held at the cemetery between 7am-10am on March 7.
The clean up will target litter and debris built up alongside grave sites, laneways, and in the surrounding environment.
"Come and join our Clean Up Australia Day event to help keep our environment free of litter, and show respect to past generations by beautifying the resting place of those that have passed away," said Tidy Towns Chair and Deputy Mayor, Christine Adams.
"There's an incredible amount of history in our cemetery, and it's important we look after the grounds themselves and the nature that surrounds it."
Ms Adams said artificial flowers remained an ongoing issue at the cemetery, and again encouraged locals visiting departed loved ones to place fresh flowers on graves rather than plastic.
"Old artificial flowers are a particular problem as they break down and get blown into the creek adjoining the cemetery and the surrounding bushland and soil," she said.
"Fresh flowers make a colourful tribute for the short term, and in time they’ll be carried away by the wind and return to the earth naturally."
Locals can turn up on the day or register online at: https://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/register/1614113031
Participants are asked wear a hat and sturdy shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. Gloves, rakes, bulk water, and bags will be provided.
The event will conclude with a free barbecue.
