Latest figures from ScrapMart at Jindabyne Landfill show Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s buyback program has diverted more than one tonne of goods from that landfill in January alone.

So-called ‘buyback’ schemes offer both environmental and economic benefits and have been available in the Snowy Monaro since 2009.

“Keeping the precious metals and toxic chemicals found in electronics out of landfill prevents potential contamination of the local environment, but it also means less of these materials need to be mined and synthesised too,” said Mayor Peter Beer, Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

“Buyback schemes like ScrapMart save ratepayers money in two different ways. First, by prolonging the life of landfill facilities and lessening ongoing maintenance costs, charges on the rates notice are kept lower. Secondly, by allowing donation of decent quality goods for free, people can easily avoid having to pay disposal fees on many items at the tip.”

From retro furniture to romance novel boxsets, whipper-snippers to Winger’s Greatest Hits, at ScrapMart in Cooma or Jindabyne there’s no better place to bag yourself a bargain.

ScrapMart is open for shoppers on Saturday from 1pm – 5pm in Cooma and on Sunday from 10am to 3pm in Jindabyne.

Donations can be dropped off during opening hours at Cooma or Jindabyne Landfills, but please keep in mind that only good quality sellable stuff can be accepted. Mouldy old mattresses and desktop PCs from 1993 still need to be disposed of responsibly!
