The Garden Room Cafe, Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane City Sunday, March 28, 2021, 3:30 – 5:30pm As part of Brisbane City’s Outdoor Gallery exhibition Sunny Side Up you are invited to join us for an artist workshop with Charlie Hillhouse. Discover the unconventional charm of familiar urban landscapes in this workshop with photographer and filmmaker Charlie Hillhouse. Hillhouse will guide you through photographic techniques and approaches to capturing the character of inanimate objects and imbuing them with a story. Charlie Hillhouse's photographic series Untitled (Roadside Trees), on display at King George Square Car Park, is an ongoing collection of portraits of trees in urban and suburban Brisbane. Recently he has photographed satellite dishes, rocks in urban spaces, and barbed wire and fences, creating 'portraits' of unconventional subjects. Bring your own (BYO) camera phone, digital, or film camera. Charlie Hillhouse biography: Charlie Hillhouse is an Australian-based artist working across film, photography and printed media. His practice employs non-traditional documentation to explore the every day, often highlighting intimate moments of resistance to daily life. Hillhouse also established Romantic Press (Tokyo, 2014) and Small House Books (Brisbane, 2010), producing limited edition publications and print-driven projects of independent artists. Hillhouse’s work has been shown in Australia, Japan, Europe, and North America. Sunny Side Up is a collection of vibrant artworks by emerging Brisbane-based contemporary artists that explore Brisbane’s subtropical identity, unique physical features and cultural atmosphere. The exhibition brings to the fore the optimism, abundance, and playful spirit of the Sunshine State. Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery transforms Brisbane’s laneways and city streets into imaginary, curious and engaging spaces. Comprising light boxes, banners, vitrines and evening projections, the Outdoor Gallery displays art outside in city street, instead of inside on gallery walls. Recently, the Outdoor Gallery has grown to now include art projections at Howard Smith Wharves. This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
