Works progress to transform the former site of the Elsternwick golf course into a nature reserve of regional significance - with the new water bodies starting to take shape in the form of the chain of ponds.
The 14-hectare site will be transformed over ten year program of works. The construction of the Chain of Ponds is one of the first milestones of the journey to create the new nature reserve.
When complete, the Chain of Ponds will include a mainstream, ephemeral soaks and billabongs extending from the northeast corner down to the centre of the reserve. The Ponds will be lined by walkways and viewing points.
The Chain of Ponds will provide habitat for flora and fauna as well as improving the amenity and enjoyment of the space for park visitors.
Works currently underway involve the construction of the Ponds and shaping the surrounding landscaping. This phase will be completed by April/May 2021.
During construction, access to sections of the reserve will remain fenced off to the public.
The final stage for construction of the Chain of Ponds will involve the installation of water pumping infrastructure and landscaping and planting to compliment the ponds themselves. These works should be completed by November 2021.
The transformation of the nature reserve is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Bayside is calling for support from the Australian and Victorian governments to join us to help shape this incredible natural refuge on Melbourne’s doorstep which will also have significant benefits for water quality in Port Phillip Bay.
