Help Name New Community Centre

Wyndham City is calling on residents to help name a new community centre currently under construction in Tarneit. 

From today, residents can head to The Loop and vote for one of two proposed names for the site: Chaffey Channel Community Centre, or Dianella Community Centre.

Once complete the community centre, which is located in Congo Drive, will feature access to early education and care services, including kindergarten, maternal and child health, consulting rooms, a community gathering space, and a suite of programs to suit all ages.

The centre is expected to open its doors in mid-2021.

Council’s Welcoming City portfolio holder, Jennie Barrera, encouraged residents to head to The Loop before 31 March and vote on their favourite name.

“We know that community centres are the heart of our communities, fostering strong connections, access to education and quality services,” Cr Barrera said.

“Therefore, it makes sense that the community has their say in naming this new centre.”

“The two names up for consultation have been selected following an extensive engagement process undertaken by Council involving key Wyndham historians and other stakeholders.”

“The name Chaffey Channel was given to an historic irrigation channel that passed through the site where the community centre is now located, while Dianella is a flora species that is indigenous to the area.”

“Names were required to meet several criteria to be considered appropriate and had to reflect the centre’s purpose and location, align with Council’s policies, and celebrate the diversity and history of Wyndham.”

The preferred name as selected by the community will be formally endorsed by Council at an upcoming Council meeting and will then be submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for formal approval and gazettal.  

Cr Barrera said this much-needed community facility would provide access for people of all abilities, and a safe and welcoming space for people of all walks of life.

“Population forecasts predict that by 2031, Tarneit’s population will grow by 53,000 residents to 75,000,” Cr Barrera said.

“This $9.5 million Wyndham City project will provide Tarneit with the infrastructure and services it needs before we experience this population boom.”

Wyndham City received $4 million in State Government funding, via the Children’s Facilities Capital Program and the Growing Suburbs Fund, to assist with the project.
