Event operators at one of Kerang’s major open public spaces and students at one of the Gannawarra’s rural schools are benefiting from the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program – Extension.
Gannawarra Shire Council received $2 million from the programme to support the rollout of various infrastructure projects, initiatives and events that support community resilience and stimulate the local economy.
“Council decided to spread this funding across all communities across the Gannawarra, supporting initiatives that benefit residents of all ages and increase opportunities for local events,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
One of the locations to benefit from this funding is Kerang’s Atkinson Park, which now boasts 15-amp electricity points at various locations throughout the facility.
“Atkinson Park is renowned as the venue for the Kerang Community Market, Kerang Show and Shine and the New Year’s Eve Party in the Park,” Mayor Gillingham said.
“These new 15-amp outlets will provide greater opportunities for event organisers to use Atkinson Park, benefiting residents, visitors and business operators.”

Meanwhile, motorists driving along the Murray Valley Highway may have noticed a recently added artwork at Lake Charm Primary School.
Developed by local artist Paul Oswin, the mural was made possible thanks to the Gannawarra Community Resilience Grants Program, which is supported by the Drought Communities Programme – Extension.
“The Lakes Community Development Group received $4,880 from the third round of this popular program for its Bringing the Lakes Community Together Through the Arts - Stage 2 initiative,” Mayor Gillingham said.
“Thanks to this support, Paul Oswin was able to run a workshop with the school’s students and spend time earlier this year completing this vibrant mural on the highway side of the school’s multipurpose room.”
