Sport is for everyone: all ages, abilities, fitness levels and skill.
That’s why Wyndham City has partnered with local sporting clubs and physical activity providers ahead of This Girl Can Week (21-28 March) to create a calendar of free activities in Wyndham for girls and women who want to try something new, or do something they haven’t done in a while.
Wyndham City Active City portfolio holder Peter Maynard said activities included come and try events for yoga, Zumba, karate, table tennis, calisthenics, football, netball and more.
Cr Maynard said there’s also local pram walking sessions for mums who want to get out and about with their bubs, and Parkrun events for walkers and runners who want to complete 5 kilometres in a fun group setting.
“This Girl Can Week is a week where we celebrate and encourage girls and women to embrace physical activity in a way that suits them,” Cr Maynard said.
“We all know that exercising is important for our physical and mental health, however half of all girls and women aren’t getting enough exercise each week – and a big reason why is a fear of being judged, or not feeling fit enough to start.”
“I encourage Wyndham’s girls and women to use This Girl Can Week as an opportunity to find an activity or sport that is right for them.”
“Whether it’s a little or a lot, what matters is getting some movement into your day, and having fun along the way.”
“We are also calling on girls and women who are already active to inspire others to get involved by sharing how sport and physical activity makes you feel on social media, using the hashtags #ThisGirlCanVic and #WyndhamGirlsCan.”
The This Girl Can campaign is a VicHealth initiative that inspires, motivates and supports girls and women to become more active.
In 2020, almost 320,000 Victorian women were inspired to get active at home or in their neighbourhoods as a result of the This Girl Can campaign.
