Balancing Esplanade’s bliss and business MEDIA RELEASE

From circus tents to pop-up shops and concerts, Council is seeking community opinion on the kinds of events and activities that may be suitable forthe Cairns Esplanade.

Mayor Bob Manning is encouraging residents, businesses and key stakeholders to complete a short survey so Council can develop a policy for the future use of the popular waterfront area.

“The Esplanade is a very popular spot for residents and visitors, so it’s not surprising that we get hundreds of enquiries every year from businesses and organisations wanting to use this prime piece of real estate,” Cr Manning said.

“Some of these activities could have a great benefit for residents and visitors looking for something new to do, while drawing more people into the city centre to benefit businesses in the area.

“But we also know that many residents love the wide, open spaces for exercise, socialising and celebrating.

“We really want to hear from the community so we can determine how to balance these competing interests.”

The consultation is focused on events and activities provided by third-parties (commercial businesses, not-for-profit groups, community organisations, cultural groups and educational bodies) that would complement Council initiatives such as the Active Living free fitness program, Cairns Festival and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Residents are encouraged to complete a short online survey to provide their thoughts on the kinds of activities that they would or would not support, and any conditions that should be put in place, such as location, operating hours, length of stay and supporting infrastructure.

Information from the public, adjacent residents and businesses, will be used to update the current Cairns Esplanade Management Policy, which sets out permitted use of this public space.
