Stage 1 works of a two-stage project to provide safer, all-weather access to the South East Regional Hospital are complete with the sealing and widening of Boundary Road in Bega.

Council’s Civil Assets Superintendent, Gary Louie said the upgrade and sealing works are a significant step to secure flood-free access to the South East Regional Hospital and completes one infrastructure-related action from the Bega and Brogo Rivers Floodplain Risk Management Plan.

“As a critical regional facility, the hospital needs reliable access in significant flooding events,” Mr Louie said.

“In addition to sealing the formerly unsealed section of Boundary Road, we have raised and widened the road in some areas and straightened the road’s alignment to improve safety and provide greater flood resilience.”

Council was able to complete Stage 1 works as a result of $583,000 of funding from the NSW Government’s Health Boost and Economic Stimulus Package. The package was developed as a response to the severity, potential impacts and ongoing uncertainty of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Stage 2 works on Boundary Road will provide further enhancements to the existing sealed section of road to enable a fully flood-proof route to the hospital from the Princes Highway.

Council will continue to seek additional funding to complete the remaining Stage 2 works.
