In a fitting end to Harmony Week, the Snowy Monaro had the privilege and honour of welcoming seven local residents as our newest Australian citizens at a ceremony held in Cooma.
Following an address from Mayor Peter Beer and the reading of a statement from Alex Hawke, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, the new citizens recited the citizenship pledge.
The Mayor then presented them individually with their citizenship certificates.
“Our region has a proud tradition of multiculturalism, one of the longest-running in Australia,” said Mayor Peter Beer, Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
“The home of four different Aboriginal peoples – the Ngarigo, Walgalu, Ngunnawal and Bidhawal – the Snowy Monaro has been from the earliest days to today, through gold rushes and the original Snowy Hydro project, a place of many different cultures.”
All local to the Snowy Monaro, the new citizens are from every corner of the globe. All were joined by friends and family at the event.
Council would like to extend its congratulations and welcome our new citizens.
