Council has worked closely with the Southern Basketball Association, Friends of Native Wildlife, environmental consultants and planning permit objectors to progress the proposed redevelopment of the basketball stadium at Tulip Street in Sandringham. This will ensure a solid future for basketball in Bayside, based on projected needs over the next 20 years.
The proposed development at the Sandringham Family Leisure Centre includes:
· a fully accessible DDA compliant stadium
· four competition standard indoor basketball courts
· change rooms with cubicle toilets and showers (gender neutral)
· storage, reception, canteen and first aid room
· air circulation system throughout stadium
· increased car parking.
Council will now commit a further $590K to the project, making Council’s contribution a total of $8.9 million. The Southern Basketball Association are also increasing their contribution to a total of $3 million.
The increased costs are related to revised plans to minimise impact to established trees, the fauna that inhabit the area, the environment and noise considerations. The revised plans will include a wildlife corridor to facilitate safe passage of animals, primarily frogs, between the Tulip Street Pond and Sandringham Golf Links.
The development of the Tulip Street Basketball Court extension recognises the impact stadiums have on the environment with the design maximising environmentally sustainable design principles such as preferring use of natural ventilation, water consumption and harvesting and solar panels.
Sports stadiums acoustics are typically reverberant, resulting from a combination of hard brick walls, high corrugated steel ceilings and wooden floors. To reduce the impact of noise generated from sport, a design solution of acoustic panels has been included.
