Local government sector comes together to support bushfire survivors

The City of Swan and Shire of Mundaring express their gratitude to local governments who are coming together to support survivors of the recent Wooroloo bushfires.

Collectively, $104,000 has been donated by 12 local governments in Western Australia.

Since the City of Perth and the Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas launched the appeal in early February, The Lord Mayor's Distress Relief Fund has received more than $15 million in donations, with 159 applications from bushfire-affected residents.

Many local government volunteer bushfire brigades from across the state also provided support during the emergency with bushfire control officers and volunteer brigades attending, as well as several local governments offering to accommodate evacuated animals and people who have been impacted. 

Administrative support is also being provided by the City of Wanneroo to the City of Swan to assist with processing Lord Mayor Distress Relief applications.

Meanwhile, Shire of Mundaring thanked Cities of Swan and Joondalup for providing additional communications resources.

City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey applauded the local government sector for their generous and unwavering support, and the people and organisations who have generously donated.

"We are very grateful for the ongoing support from our friends and neighbours, who are always there to lend a hand," he said.

"These generous contributions will go directly to the survivors of the Wooroloo bushfires and help them rebuild and get back on their feet.

"People all across WA opened their homes and wallets to help in so many ways, from financial donations, support for animals and accommodation, and now we're seeing that community spirit continue to grow during the recovery and rebuild phase - we can't thank Western Australians enough."

Shire of Mundaring President John Daw said that local governments put community first and that helping each other during a crisis reflected that commitment.

He said the Shire of Mundaring received many offers of support.

“This disaster stretched our resources as staff were diverted from their regular roles,” Cr Daw said.

“Our counterparts rallied and we are grateful for the assistance received.”
