The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has advised that they have sent 5,340 Infringement Notices to persons who did not vote in the Bayside 2020 general election. Council plays no role in issuing these infringements.
The VEC is the responsible authority for managing local government elections.
The infringement notices follow the VEC issuing Apparent Failure to Vote Notices (AFTVN) to query reasons for not voting. The VEC recorded a high number of non-responses following the AFTVN process.
Individuals who receive an infringement will have an opportunity to provide additional information to support their reasons for not voting should they believe they should have been excused.
All enquiries from non-voters should be directed to the VEC’s compulsory voting centre on 1300 551 575. This is a different number from the VEC’s general public enquiry line (131 832 or (03) 8620 1100).
