Stay safe on and offline
Bayside City Council 29 Mar 2021

Recent incidents in Bayside parks and open spaces have illustrated the connection between safety on and offline.

Young people gathering in outdoor spaces and sharing their locations on social media has been a factor in the incidents. For example, adding a photo to a location via Snap Maps means anyone from around the world can see your image and where it was uploaded. Snap Maps indicate how many Snapchat stories are coming from a particular location as a “heatmap”.

We encourage parents to discuss turning off maps in Snapchat with your children and turning on Ghost Mode. View a sample Snapchat heatmap below.

Council is working closely with Victoria Police to respond to safety concerns in Bayside parks and open spaces.

The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s website includes a wide range of resources to stay up to date and safe online. This includes interactive tools for parents, kids, educators, seniors, women and people from diverse backgrounds
