Snowy Monaro Regional Council is commencing its consultation process for the new proposed rates structure. Councillors resolved to present five models of how the rates can be distributed between ratepayers to the community and these are now ready.
This review process is a requirement of the current legislation and will not add a single cent to the total rates collected by Council, only how it is spread among the landowners.
Council has to set up a new rate structure that complies with the legislation and this will mean change for most people. The three former councils had very different rate structures and views on how much each type of landowner should pay. Bringing these together into a single unified structure will mean changes for most people under all options. Some people will pay more and others will pay less.
The focus of this consultation is on looking at the principles the community wants to use to fairly and equitably distribute the rates, not the level of the rates themselves. Models have been developed based on those who benefit from paying for those services, with ratepayers sharing the costs and to try and minimise the extent of changes.
Council’s YourSay page includes information on rating structures, the five presented models and a link that allows people to check the rates calculated under the different models. https://yoursaysnowymonaro.com.au/rates-harmonisation1
Our community is encouraged to discuss their thoughts on this forum, ask questions and complete the survey so all feedback can be compiled and reviewed thoroughly.
Council team members will also be travelling around our towns and villages to meet with community groups. To provide even more options there will be online forums held.
