York rolled out the welcome mat to guests from Toodyay, Goomalling, Northam, Chittering and Beverley Visitor Centres when the York Visitor Centre hosted a tourism familiarisation (famil) last Thursday.
Showcasing York’s heritage, culture and natural assets, guests were invited to board several vintage cars provided by members of the York Motor Museum travelling through the CBD to Mt Brown.
Vintage cars from the 1910’s – 1940’s immersed guests in York’s history whilst guided commentary provided the opportunity to introduce York’s newer attractions including the Avon Park redevelopment, Janet Millett RV rest stop and York’s recently opened businesses.
At the Mt Brown summit local Noongar elder Audrey Nettle - Narkle provided a welcome to country and cultural storytelling whilst overlooking the York township.
The famil concluded with a return to the York Motor Museum, afternoon tea provided by Gather York and a short, guided walking tour back to the Town Hall with hello stops at Penny Farthing Sweets, York Courthouse Complex and The Good Life Store.
“Famils are a great opportunity to network with other tourism providers and identify areas of commonality that can be promoted to encourage more people to visit and stay longer in the Avon Valley” said Shire President Cr Smythe. The famils are funded by the Shire of York and delivered by the York Visitor Centre in partnership with local tourism businesses and attractions.
