COVID restrictions for Byron Shire from 5pm 31 March

The NSW Government is putting in place a list of restrictions for the Byron, Ballina, Tweed and Lismore Local Government Areas after a new locally-acquired case of COVID-19 was recorded.

NSW Health said a man was at the Beach Hotel on Friday 26 March at the same time as another group of people from Queensland who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.

The man went to a number of venues in Ballina on Sunday 29 March while unknowingly infectious and these have been added to the list of venues on the NSW Health website.

Members of the public are asked to continue to check the NSW Health website and test and isolate accordingly. 

From 5pm today people who live in the Byron, Ballina, Lismore and Tweed LGAs are asked not to travel outside these areas, the wearing of masks in public indoor areas will be mandatory and people will have to remain seated in hospitality venues.

People will only be allowed to have a maximum of 30 people at their houses.

Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, said the Easter weekend will present a challenge.

“All we can ask is that people do the right thing, follow the rules and think of the impact of their actions on their friends and neighbours,” Mayor Richardson said.

Council has expanded its sewage treatment testing to include all sewerage treatment plants in the Byron Shire.

“My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has fronted up for a COVID-19 test,” Mayor Richardson said.

“To everyone out there – if you have the mildest of symptoms – please get tested,” he said.
