Council is already beginning preparations for next year's Heritage Festival after staging a successful event over the Easter Weekend.
As part of the festival Council activated the Town Hall Facade with a historical slide show and live theatre, held an open day at the Archives, a guided tour of the cemetery, and an exhibition of political cartoons by Claude Marquet.
Community groups and businesses did their part, with the Palace offering a tour of their historic building, Heritage Walk Tour volunteers showing many tourists around the city, and the staging of a 'nation dance' to celebrate indigenous heritage.
A gala dinner was also held at The Old Brewery to celebrate the John Reid Memorial Heritage Awards, with awards won on the night by the Historical Society for their ongoing work, and by Steve Radford and Margaret McBride for their restoration of the former West Darling Hotel (now the Broken Hill Pub).
Mayor Darriea Turley said good feedback was received around the cemetery tour and Town Hall Façade activation, but encouraged locals to have their say on how our heritage should be celebrated.
“There are a lot of tourists in town over the Easter period, and we'd definitely be open to hearing from the community on how they’d like to see our heritage and history showcased," said Mayor Turley.
"The event is still in its infancy and we'd be really keen to have more community input to grow the event and ensure it caters to everyone’s needs.
"If anyone has any ideas they're more than welcome to contact our events team, or even join the Heritage Festival committee."
Those with an interest in the event can contact Heritage Festival Chair, Deputy Mayor Christine Adams, on 0428 874 609.
